Alessandro Michele: The Love & Beyond

No matter the style, the texture or even the age of targeted customers, Gucci is so different after Alessandro Michele became its creative director. His liberal heart isn't afraid to take risks and give this 96-year-old brand a makeover. Aside from Gucci, Alessandro Michele also made himself more famous overnight. The playful designs made Marc Jacobs and other fashionistas lose their minds in Gucci stores. Now, everybody wants to get their hands on the retro Gucci tee, the logo belt, and Dionysus hand bag. 

So what's the magic of Michele? This year, the 42-year-old fashion designer was invited as a guest editor of <A MAGAZINE curated by>, and also organized the exhibition <Blind For Love>. Michele opened up his world-- the love ones in his life and beyond-- for all to see.

The exhibition was divided into 3 parts-- Cabinet of Curiosities, Dream Within A Dream and #BlindForLove, allowing us to see Michele's world in different perspective.

Inspired by the poem <L'aveugle Par Amour> (trans: Blind For Love) by the French poet Fanny de Beauharnais, Michele also has his own definition of love. Each painting, art piece and photography represented something in his life. Everything made him who he is today.  

The Love & Beyond

Jewelry represents eternity, their unconditionally reckless love to each other. 

Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, as known as the Duke of Windsor, are the perfect symbol of blinding love. We all heard about the legendary love story, but the fact they wrote down their little stories on the jewelries is so remarkable.

Michele always takes his friends as inspirations. The strong friendship between Jared Leto and Michele had the designer make a pillow with Jared's teeth as decoration.

It isn't difficult to see that Alessandro is grateful for those who appreciate his works. Madonna's stylist Arianne Phillips loves his designs, so she asked Michele for some used fabrics. Then she made an art piece out of which Michele gave her. The delicate piece represents the unbreakable bond and the blinding love between them.   

Another friend, the singer Florence Welch, reminded him that God gives the greatest unconditional love of all. Jesus sacrificed himself just to release people from their sins. His love is sacred and selfless. As a Christian, I can relate even more to this concept of "Blind for love", which is really touching.

Renaissance 

This era plays a huge role in Michele's designs. You can see lots of Renaissance elements in the Gucci ss17 and Cruise 18 collection, which just released yesterday.

The Imagination

The girls took the cake to picnic, but left it untouched.

Where did they go?

Gone with the wind in the name of freedom......

The photographs were taken by Gia Coppola in the Joshua Tree National Park, California. Inspired by the movie <Picnic At Hanging Rock> (click for the brief intro), she wanted to tell a story about teenage Catholic school girls finding themselves, freedom, and where they belong in this conservative society. 

The girls were searching for the true voice that spoke to their souls, but it was themselves all along. The famous 16 years old movie star Rowan Blanchard embroidered her own words about youth onto the fabrics. She wrote about the love, loneliness and all the struggles we experienced in those teenage year.  

"It was you. It was you all along." 

It was about setting our minds free, letting the sound of wind brushed through the edge of your imagination. We all seemed to be happy, but inside, in fact, peace never came. It was so real looking at those photos that I could not help feeling complicated yet calm.

The third section was a three-sided screen room, displaying photos in the magazine and more Michele's inspirations. With experimental music playing, the video took it to a whole new level.  It was the finale of this <Blind For Love> exhibition, whispering that all good things come to an end eventually. 

 

Yes, I went to the exhibition twice. I was so fascinated that all I wanted was to know more about him. It was magical. I could find no other places like this in Taipei. No one ever told me to see these art pieces in any certain ways, but I always found something relatable in each photography personally. Perhaps, that was the reason I didn't want to leave. 

I was blind for love, too.
